Prostate cancer ranks second only to skin cancer as the most common cancer diagnosis for men, and approximately 32,000 die of the disease each year. But most diagnosed prostate cancer does not require medical treatment; therefore, active surveillance has proven to be an option for men with low-risk disease. Furthermore, the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test has been misused and has become a controversial biomarker for prostate cancer. Novel clinical serum and urine tests have proven to be more sensitive and specific for the diagnosis.
New scientific research and Dr. Espinosa’s own clinical experience suggest that nutritional and lifestyle methods to counter prostate cancer reduce disease-risk development and progression and effectively minimize adverse effects of medical treatment. These methods work by creating a microenvironment hostile to prostate tumors.
In this presentation, Dr. Espinosa will discuss the specific naturopathic approaches that work for prostate cancer patients, including prescriptive physical exercise, focused nutrition, and targeted nutraceutical supplements, along with dosages required for clinical efficacy. He will review the biology of prostate cancer, cover modern methods of diagnosing the disease, explore evidence for the benefits of an anti-prostate-cancer lifestyle, and offer practical tools to help patients succeed with the prescribed lifestyle methods.
Dr. Geo Espinosa is a naturopathic functional medicine doctor widely recognized as a leading authority on integrative urology and men’s health, including integrative approaches to prostate cancer. He was the first naturopathic physician to complete an internship, residency, and fellowship in urology at a conventional medical institution (Columbia University), and he is on the faculties of both the Institute for Functional Medicine and the medical school at NYU Langone Health, where he also practices and directs the Integrative Urology Center.
As an avid researcher and writer, Dr. Espinosa has authored numerous scientific papers and books–including Thrive, Don’t Only Survive, his signature guide to living optimally before and after a prostate cancer diagnosis–and co-edited Integrative Sexual Health, a text for clinicians. He also developed the Integrative Andrology and Urology Institute (IAUI), an online program for health care practitioners interested in science-based integrative methods for urological and male conditions, and he lectures internationally on the application of science-based holistic treatments for those conditions.
He is co-founder and producer of the male health website DrGeo.com, and regularly produces informative podcasts and newsletters on topics related to prostate cancer and other male health issues.
Dr. Espinosa also co-founded XY Wellness, a company focused on addressing men’s health issues through nutraceuticals and lifestyle education. He serves as the chief medical officer and formulator of advanced nutraceutical products at both XY and its newer sister company, Mr. Happy.
