GLOBAL CHAPTER EVENT! Open for all chapter/student alliance participants!

TOPIC: Integrative Physiology: An East- West Perspective.

SPEAKER: Dr. David W. Miller, MD, LAc

EVENT DESCRIPTION: Much of medicine surrounds the way we organize information, be that our physiology and how we perceive structures and systems, or how we identify pathologic patterns and match those to treatment approaches. Biomedicine arguably still uses a structural or cadaveric organizational system for its medical paradigm, focusing on body parts and what we can learn from delving deep into microscopic, cellular substructures and receptor functions. Eastern medicine takes a “macroscopic” view, and organizes around biopsychosocial systems that fulfill critical functions for survival and engage many substructures for successful operation.

As we begin to understand both approaches more thoroughly, we can see how these two views, “microscopic/structural” and “macroscopic/system-based,” might mutually inform one another. Through this holistic lens, the potential for integrated treatment approaches may amplify both our clinical effectiveness and our appreciation of our own elegance as complex beings that are intertwined with our environments and each other. The two systems may also contextualize one another, so that a greater appreciation of the brilliance of both can emerge. In this talk, Dr. Miller will present ideas on how to think about health and human experience from a synthesized “East-West” view, in hopes of broadening understanding of Chinese medical physiology and showing how the traditional perspective can connect to and inform biomedical understandings of human function derived from the framework of evolutionary biology.

SPEAKER: Dr. David W. Miller, MD, LAc is the founding Medical Director for Pediatric Integrative Medicine at the University Hospitals Connor Integrative Health Network and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He is one of the only physicians dually board-certified in pediatrics (American Board of Pediatrics) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine–NCCAOM). Prior to joining the UH Connor network, he was in private practice for 14 years at East-West Integrated Medicine, LLC in Chicago, where he saw patients of all ages for holistic and integrative care. In addition, Dr. Miller has worked on legislation related to the practice of acupuncture and has served in various capacities as an educator. He is the past chair of the NCCAOM’s Biomedicine Exam Development Committee, designed and taught the pediatrics curriculum for Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, and taught integrative physiology and pediatrics for a number of acupuncture and Oriental medicine doctoral programs, including those of Five Branches University, Yo San University, and Pacific College. He has also designed masters and doctoral curricula in medical communications and public health, and has been an educational contributor to the AIHM Fellowship program. Dr. Miller received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Vassar College and his M.D. from the Brown University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago and then attained his Master of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine at the Chicago campus of Pacific College.
